Developing a Diabetes Game Plan It's a lot of work, but the first step is getting started – and you can do it.

Image
As a nurse I often hear, “I know what needs to be done, I just don’t know how to do it,” or “I won’t be able to do it.” The “it” is behavior change – a major component of controlling diabetes. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention lists seven behaviors – healthy eating, physical activity, monitoring blood sugar, taking medications as prescribed, good problem-solving skills, healthy coping skills and risk-reduction behaviors – which result in good blood sugar control, reduce complications and improve quality of life. If you’re asking, “How do I do it?” let’s get started! Do you have a game plan?  Is it the right plan for your unique needs? Does it include things you like? Write your plan down, and put it somewhere visible as a reminder. Set the right goals.  Before creating a plan, you have to decide what you want to accomplish. Make goals specific and something you can do. A goal of better blood sugar control should include specific steps to get you there – such as me...

Believe it: Knicks among NBA draft's winners, Sixers among losers

Image
Winners New York Knicks The 2015 NBA draft is in the books. I'll be back in the morning with full draft grades for all 30 teams. But in the meantime, here's my initial take on three teams that won the draft and three teams that lost.   Hours before the draft if looked like the Knicks were going to screw this up. The team seemed unsure of itself if Karl-Anthony Towns, Jahlil Okafor and D'Angelo Russell were off the board. While Kristaps Porzingis was the best talent left on the board, no one, including me, really thought they'd actually take him. Knicks fans may have booed, but the Knicks may have very well gotten the second best talent in the draft. He may not dominate in Year 1, but Porzingis' talent is off the charts. I also loved the trade that send Tim Hardaway Jr. to the Wizards for the draft rights to Jerian Grant. Grant is a big combo guard who can do everything. He's a good athlete, can get to the basket and is a solid shooter. He can defend ...

Movie review: ‘Ted 2,’ like its hero’s midsection, is overstuffed

Image
In this image released by Universal Pictures, the character Ted, voiced by Seth MacFarlane, left, and Mark Wahlberg appear in a scene from "Ted 2. You can almost hear Seth MacFarlane trying to grow as a filmmaker during “Ted 2” — and not just because of the almost uncomfortable periods of audience silence that greeted sections of the sequel. In their efforts to avoid making the same movie twice, writer-director MacFarlane and returning co-writers Alec Sulkin and Wellesley Wild have wisely thrown out the second-time-around blueprint of amping up the outrageousness. Because, honestly, once you’ve seen a living teddy bear drink beer, smoke weed, snort coke and offend pretty much everyone within earshot, the whole thing becomes pretty hard to top. Instead, they’ve given the sequel a timely message, plenty of heart and the most elaborate, cl...

wants the Echo to be your personal robot butler

Image
Amazon's fuller ambitions for the Echo and its Alexa cloud-based voice software have become a little clearer. The company announced Thursday that it is opening up the system to developers, so that anyone can design their own programs to work with the sleek cylindrical in-home assistant . The company announced that its new developer's kit will make it easy for programmers to work with the device, even without previous knowledge of how to work with voice-recognition systems. "No experience with speech recognition or natural language understanding is required—Amazon does all the work to hear, understand, and process the customer’s spoken request so a developer doesn’t have to,"  the company said in a press release. (Amazon chief executive Jeffrey P. Bezos is the owner of The Washington Post.) That means amateur and professional developers alike can make programs f...

Treasure Truck’ Combines Flash Sales and Storefronts

Image
Amazon.com Inc. is bringing impulse buying right around the corner. The Web retailer unveiled Thursday the Treasure Truck, which carries paddle boards, porterhouse steaks and other discounted items that people can buy online and pick up when the vehicle is nearby. Amazon’s mobile application will tell shoppers what’s on the truck each day and list pickup times and locations in Seattle, where the company is based . While Amazon has daily deals and flash sales on its website and has experimented with temporary physical stores, the marketing stunt effectively merges them. The initiative is aimed at luring shoppers to marked-down merchandise in a short window of time and getting goods into their hands as soon as possible. While the Treasure Truck has been spotted on the streets of Seattle this week, it will be open for shoppers starting Saturday, the company said . “It can only work in densely populated areas like New York and Chicago,” said Victor Anthony, an analyst at A...
