The Lagos State Government on Wednesday said a breach of standard safety practice by the Elegushi Beach operators caused the death of the two University of Lagos postgraduate students. The state Commissioner for Waterfront and Infrastructure Development, Mr. Ade Akinsanya, who made the remark, added that the government would thenceforth mete out heavy punishment to any operator that failed to comply strictly with the standard safety measures. The PUNCH had reported that the students – Adesola Ogunmefun and 25-year-old Funmilayo Odusina – were having fun at the beach with their birthday friend, Bolu, on Sunday, June 5, when they were submerged by strong tides which swept them into the Atlantic Ocean. While Bolu survived, Ogunmefun and Odusina, who were on the verge of bagging their Master’s degrees in International Law and Diplomacy from UNILAG, gave up the ghost before they could get medical treatment. The Senate yesterday set up a nine-man ad-hoc committee to look into the report of the Nigeria Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (NEITI) from 2013 to 2015 indicting the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) of not remitting over N1 trillion into the Federation Account. This decision followed a resolution reached by the lawmakers shortly after the Executive Secretary of the agency, Mr. Waziri Adio, briefed them on the content of the audit report at plenary. Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki, in setting up the ad-hoc committee, said the issues raised by the NEITI boss cut across a lot of the different standing committees, and that in view of the enormity involved, the general opinion is that an ad-hoc committee be set up to probe the report. He said the terms of reference of the panel led by the Chairman, Senate Committee on Petroleum Resources (Downstream), Jibrin Barau, would be to re-examine the financial processes and the fiscal audit report of th...

EgyptAir flight found

The cockpit voice recorder from doomed EgyptAir Flight 804 was at least partially recovered from the Mediterranean Sea, Egypt’s investigation committee said Thursday, giving rise to hope that mysteries surrounding the crash could soon be solved. The black box was damaged and had to be carefully retrieved in stages by a salvage ship with robotic search devices, the committee said in a statement. The ship "was able to salvage the part that contains the memory unit, which is considered the most important part of the recording device," the statement said. There was no immediate word on the fate of the data recorder. Searchers spotted the plane's wreckage Wednesday, almost one month after the Cairo-bound Airbus A320 plunged into the sea more than three hours into a flight from Paris. All 66 people aboard perished. The voice recorder was being taken by ship to the Egyptian city of Alexandria, where specialists hope to reveal and analyze the ...
