Kayode Ajulo say: Senate has no constitutional power to summon AGF

Image
I read with great amuzement that Attorney-General of the Federation, Mallam Abubakar Malami has once again been summoned by the Nigerian Senate to appear before it on Thursday 30th June, 2016, through its committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters, for instituting a forgery case against the presiding officers of the Upper Chamber, and two top management staff of the National Assembly. The invitation is unbecoming and a flagrant abuse of Separation of Powers under our known laws. For the records, the is also prejudicial. With a very strong caveat, members of Nigerian parliament should come out of their infantile view point and know when to cross the line. I wonder why Senator David Umaru led Committee would have allowed itself to be used to cause infraction on matters that are purely beyond the Senate and presently being prosecuted in the court of competent jurisdiction. Although the power of Senate to conduct investigation is broad and inherent in the legislative...

They told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja that foreign investors would be encouraged to come in because they will no longer worry about getting FX at non-competitive rates. Mr Tony Ejinkeonye, President, Abuja Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ACCI) said that the new product would enable the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) manage exchange rate volatility. According to him, uncertainties in the Nigerian foreign exchange market over the last one year are major contributors to the distortions in the economy. ``The Naira-settled OTC FX Futures contracts will enable the CBN a greater opportunity to manage exchange rate volatility, thereby achieving greater market confidence, liquidity and improvement in business planning. ``It would also ensure job se...

The Nigerian Army has reacted to the accusations made by ex militant leader

Image
The ex-militant leader in an open letter to President Buhari, on Tuesday, June 28, 2016, also alleged that the Army arrested 10 young men who were sitting for the West African Senior Secondary School Examinations (WASSCE) and paraded them as members of the Niger Delta Avengers. The Army denied the allegations saying the young men were “pipeline vandals caught red-handed, as the military officers caught them with explosives and other equipment that are used in damaging pipelines and other critical infrastructure, before taking them into custody.” According to The Guardian, the Director of Defence Information, Rabe Abubakar, said “It is the same people carrying out these crimes and sponsoring it that are carrying out the media campaigns to malign the military, brandish bold faced lies and all that. We don’t get engage in such cheap activities especially during such operations, every personnel is careful not to get involved in such crime. So the allegation is completely baseless...

Ex-Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Adesola Amosu

Image
A report by Nation Newspapers revealed that Amosu's lawyer, Bolaji Ayorinde (SAN), made the disclosure while arguing the ex-Chief of Air Staff's bail application. Arguing the bail application before Justice Mohammed Idris , Ayorinde stressed that Amosu has always cooperated with the prosecution since his arrest in January 2016 and should be granted bail as the case continues. In the words of Ayorinde, “ He has remitted colossal sums of money to the federal government, although not in admittance of guilt, but out of cooperation with security agencies." Continuing, Amosu's lawyer said, “ My application is that bail be granted to the first defendant on self-recognisance. Let those terms be liberal. He has been reporting to the EFCC, sometimes twice a week. The first defendant will make himself available for trial .” Earlier in the week, the EFCC had arraigned Amosu alongside Air Vice Marshal Jacob Adigun and Air Commodore Olugbenga Gbadebo alongside with eight ...
