Lagos State Gov. to set up strategic food reserves

The Lagos State Government said on Friday that it would soon set up strategic food reserves across the state, to guard against food shortage and ensure affordability. Mr Sanni Okanlawon, Special Adviser to Gov. Akinwumi Ambode on Food Security, made the remark in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), in Lagos. He said about 40 per cent of perishable foods brought to Lagos got spoilt due to inadequate storage facilities in the state.\ "Looking at the area of food preservation and storage, we have what we call Strategic Food Reserves which we are addressing in this year’s budget. "We want to put in place silos and food preservation devices like cold rooms and other cooling devices to preserve perishables like tomatoes, onions and other fresh foods. "This is because 40 per cent of what is brought into Lagos as perishables actually get wasted because of lack of preservation. This was confirmed in a statement issued by Head, Press and Public Relations, Ikechukwu Ani   on July 1, 2016. The statement further revealed that the Chairman of the Commission, Sir, Dr. Mike Mbama Okiro congratulated the affected officers for their meritorious service to the nation and wished them well in their new endeavours. The other 19 Assistant Inspectors General of Police who were affected and were senior to the new acting Inspector General of Police, before his appointment, include Bala A Hassan, Yahaya Garba Ardo, Irmiya F Yarima, Danladi Y Mshebwala, Tambari Y. Ex-acting governor of Adamawa State, Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, who was to be remanded in prison over an alleged N2.9billion fraud, has been granted bail by Justice A. R. Mohammed of the Federal High Court Abuja

 Fintiri was granted bail to to the tune of N500million after he was charged by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC on June 30, 2016 alongside his company, Mayim Construction and Properties Limited  on a 5-count charge of money laundering. Fintiri's bail application saw Justice Mohammed saying, ” since the EFCC, being the complainant, had already released the defendant on administrative bail since June 15, 2016, with no complaint of defaulting contained in their counter affidavit, there was no evident reason as to why reservations were harbored this time."   He continued further saying, " The court has not seen any reason not to admit the first defendant (Fintiri) to bail pending determination of the case, and so, the defendant is hereby admitted to bail in the sum of N500million with two sureties in like sum, who must have landed properties within Abuja. Sierra Leone's Deputy High Commissioner to Nigeria, Maj-Gen. Nelson Williams has been reportedly kidnapped in Kaduna.

According to a tweet by the Chairman of Nigeria Human Rights Commission, Williams, who was head of armed Forces in Sierra Leone, was kidnapped and a ransom of $150K is being demanded   The chairman further tweeted that Williams' driver is also missing as the security operatives are reported to have swung into action. A report by Makoni Times revealed that the Deputy High Commissioner was kidnapped on Thursday June 30, 2016 in Kaduna when he was attending a military graduation ceremony
